Sketchbook TV @ The Design Museum

So I am excited about Sketchbook TV's latest video episode. We've had a dry spell somewhat with problems with editors not coming up with the goods for some stuff that we shot over summer - such a real shame (quite literally have not heard from them).

So I took the plunge and bought my own Canon 7D and took it out to 'officially' video my first gig at Sketchbook Mag's event at The Design Museum. I couldn't stay for long and there was a lot going on and no real chance to get a proper sit down interview with Fred Butler or any of the other amazing designers or illustrators there. Not a prob though because I had a lot of fun filming it and had a good bash at editing. It took ages to find a good tune, having scoured lots of sites that offer royalty free music and all that jazz. Finally settled for this awesome tune 'Inside the Light' by Musician Toy which totally worked in the fact that Sketchbook's event was called 'Sparkle the Dark Up'. So I went with that, with lots of shots of silhouette and light etc.

Have a gander, I am proud :D

Video I shot using my Canon 7D.

My first piece of writing to be published online :)

Joy today - Words with Jam's latest issue it out today and with it, my wee little excerpt on my love of libraries.

The issue looks fantastic this month, so make sure to check it out. It includes interesting articles such as:

  • 'How Not to Lose Friends and Alienate People...and still carry on writing' (super relevant to all of us who live by the pen and struggle with work life balance)
  • Inspiration techniques
  • What Kind of Procrastinator Are You?
  • Facebook for Writers
  • Where in the World Wide Web? (for researchers)
My article is on page 50 spread; let me know what you think :D Had to take a quick snapshot of my name in print and all that..!

MOOD: so excited that my name has appeared in print. This is just as awesome as having that paragraph dedicated to Sketchbook TV is Sketchbook Magazine's 2nd issue of the editor's note.

Yours truly has another bash at interviewing

And might I say I am getting better at it. What am I talking about? Being thrust in to interviewing George Lamb at The Clothes Show of course, thanks to my camera-man who is ever aware, ever observant and very action-man; the kind of push I need really, so thank you awesome Matthieu Ferreira!!

So please check out Sketchbook TV at the Clothes Show Live where we asked George Lamb about London and the 1960s...any guesses to what his answer might be? Oh and he was wearing really cool red espadrilles but we didn't get a shot of that, sorry! And he is very good looking in the flesh, so of course I was super geekish when interviewing him. But we got him to give out the first shout for Sketchbook TV ever :D

Highlight of that weekend? Hell, yeah!

Sketchbook TV - interview with Susie Bubble!

Hi guys, I haven't had chance to update as much as I want, as I want to post a review on 'Kick Ass' and 'Into the Wild' but have had precious little time to myself over the last 2 weeks. One thing that has kept me mucho occupied has been Sketchbook's Pop Up Shop.

Please check out my latest attempt at editing the interview with Susie Bubble, who is Wafa's (editor in chief of Sketchbook Mag) huge inspiration for getting into fashion journalism etc.

Sketchbook Magazine's Pop Up Shop

Ok so I haven't had a chance to update my blog even though I have had oodles to say and comment on but have failed to write them down so will no doubt forget. *sigh* The major thing that has been keeping my occupied outside of paid work has been Sketchbook Magazine's 1st Pop Up Shop which is looking awesome and starts on Wed 31st March 2010. I went over on the weekend and squeezed in among the various volunteers painting and arranging etc and managed to shoot a little bit and string it together in a promo. So if you find yourself around Carnaby Street in London Town over the next three weeks, pop on down, it's sure to amaze!

London Fashion Week Day 1

So yesterday was a day of the completely unplanned. I was supposed to be doing a Sketchbook TV gig and getting a team to cover the event - of course! However, editorial from Sketchbook Mag kind of failed to leave a plan in place before going off to New York Fashion Week, which was a real shame because we got there and the TV team were not able to obtain passes that would allow shooting of shows or backstage. (What's the point right?) We ended up doing a lot of improvising in order to grab some footage and the team were really patient, so thanks guys! It was a little embarrassing. I have one story to tell otherwise - this Sri Lankan guy came to us when he saw our TV team and asked who we were etc and then suggested we interview him and so of course, we did, only I couldn't find a Sketchbook writer anywhere to conduct said interview and that left me to do it - *shudder* which meant being IN FRONT of the camera people, but alas, duty called and saw me stepping up. (a career path as presenter a possibility? Oh i have such delusions of grandeur...hehe). The guy's name is Emmanuel Ray and he seemed to simply *love* the way I said his name (I didn't know there was another way to say it to be fair). But he is everywhere on the net - his career trajectory has just taken off. I kind of went into a 'mode' and started with 'So this is Sketchbook TV here at London Fashion Week with fashion expert...' etc as if I was doing this for years. Oh, I realised I missed getting into the 'role'.

Yet alas, we did not have continued luck with anyone else. We did see Yvan Rodic of The Facehunter Show but he was running around like anything and we couldn't get a minute with him.

We did film in and around Somerset House and the galleries; can someone tell me why Marks and Spencer's Percy the Pig showed up? Anyway, while Sasha filmed cutaways etc, I chatted away to designers and PR people (out of politeness really, cos heck I don't know squat about designers and fashion etc but then that shifted to genuine interest so I wasn't entirely insincere) - I talked to a couple of guys from Aristide; their gloves are gorgeous; also chatted to the designer behind BUBA - brilliant handbags with definite Indian inspiration behind their looks - and MiH jeans.

I'm a little out of it, so forgive me, that's about as much as I can muster about LFW. I hope the TV team can get permission to shoot some shows or at least backstage - that would be amazing!

Sketchbook TV - coming soon, Bompas & Parr

I was at Sketchbook HQ yesterday. after going along to a shoot where we interviewed Njide Ugboma of 'Let Them Eat Cake' mag. They had such a lovely office space, very chilled out, and being a new quarterly, they've done super well for themselves, which is inspiring for us Sketchbook folk.

Back at HQ, I managed to see a edited cut of our Bompas & Parr event coverage and it was very exciting. The work of our amazing editor, Rob Dixon, continues to amaze me and it's great to have a working environment where everyone can put their individual creative mark on things. Super times - Sketchbook TV & Bompas & Parr

Ok so I had a pretty rad time yesterday and I'm rather marveling at the chance at having gone.

Firstly I had a meeting with Sketchbook to have a look at a couple of videos that had been edited, one of Anna Fayemi's shoot and another with Yang Du. Oh and wasn't it marvelous chaps! it really was very cool to see how the editing literally transforms these disjointed shots into a narrative and done with flair and creativity. I so love working with creative people like this, it's so inspiring. I can't come up with said creativity myself, I reserve it for strange passages of prose like verse (is there such a thing, I hear you ask?) So that was awesome and it means Sketchbook TV will be going live rather soon!

But the main event of the day - or rather night - was the Bompas and Parr Punchbowl with Courvoisier. We didn't know what to expect after reading that this punchbowl would be big enough to serve 25 000 people! Needless to say it wasn't a bowl per se, but rather a something more rectangle - like a pool basically. I came to realise that the logistics of having a giant bowl which everyone could walk around or something was probably damn hard and then there's always those darn healthy and safety issues, non? People could 'row' across it on an orange slice shaped raft by pulling themselves along with a rope. Very cool though I'd wager I'd fall in. And everyone had to wear hair nets and aprons etc; it had a bizarre Charlie and Chocolate Factory feel to it, and the venue being 33 Portland Place, it set a nice 'high culture' feel. On that note, I must say it was the first time I've consciously come to appreciate the culture of drinking - and I mean the culture, not the 'let's get smashed' attitude that reduces one to idiocy but rather the idea of coming together, taking your time to sample such flavours and concoctions etc etc; I mean I've always fancied the dinner party feel over the city bar feel, where you could have a large bowl of punch and just while away the evening playing cards or all debating - or networking. And I sampled the punch myself (how could I not?) and though I was convinced I wouldn't like something like it, I actually did, though it was rather strong.

And these kinds of experiences don't come along all the time, so definitely grateful I got a chance to experience it - thanks to Sketchbook! Here's to more events like it *raises phantom glass of punch*

progress

I feel good today and it seems like a long time coming hehehe. you know sometimes you need to get back in touch with certain frames of mind/modes of thinking or perceiving even that remind you

a) you have unlimited potential
b) what are you afraid of?
c) good things ARE happening
d) you are a part of that happening

So yeah I've been neglecting the whole philosophy behind this blog which is to be 'always grateful' so I had to re-align with that.

Today, I'm feel accomplished somewhat - I have edited a video - the first in fact - for Sketchbook TV. I have managed - after weeks of struggling- to get two other editors to edit other projects - all very exciting. And the work other colleagues have done is coming along - and you marvel at everyone's willingness to do it - and for free!

Next stop - a PAYING job!

sing with me now 'I can do it!'
